Progress & Wellbeing


Mrs Steel & The Wellbeing Team provide a Calm, and Supportive Environment that pupils can access for emotional support and a range of interventions. The support offered includes 1:1 support as well as a range of programmes and group interventions.


The provision is open every break and lunch for people that need quiet time or support during these periods. Pupils can make arrangements to speak to one of the staff or they can be referred for intervention via the Pastoral Team/Head of Year, with parental consent. 


Interventions provided include: 


Emotional Support:

Support and assistance to help deal with challenging, emotional issues. Having someone to listen to them and offer strategies to support any difficulties they are facing or onward referrals for more structured programmes.



Self Esteem

Self Esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves. When we have healthy Self Esteem, we to feel positive about ourselves and about life in general. It makes us able to deal with life's ups and downs better. When our Self Esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our life in a more negative and critical light. We can help young people boost their self esteem by encouraging them to focus on the positive aspects about themselves.


SAP--Student Assistance Programme:


Support groups provide a safe, supportive environment where children can talk about challenges in their lives, in an atmosphere of trust and warmth. Members can share concerns, formulate goals, support each other, and grown in a positive direction.


 


Anger Management:

Offering support to pupils to help them understand and manage their own anger. To reduce the feelings anger creates by allowing individuals to explore possible causes, triggers and confronts any underlying issues. This is delivered by the Behaviour Support Team.


 


Referral to School Based Counselling:

The opportunity to talk about things that are concerning us, in confidence and with a qualified Counsellor. What is spoken about will depend on the individuals, but common themes are stress, relationships, change, loss and distressing traumatic events.


 


Referral to CAMH'S--Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service:

CAMHS are a team of doctors, nurses, psychologists and therapists who help young people up to the age of 18 with mental health problems. Many young people do not have mental illnesses, but may experience issues with their emotions, behaviour, anxiety relationships with other people or coping with stress and trauma. CAMH'S aim is to offer the most up to date and best researched treatments.


Referral to Barnardos:

Barnardos provide a range of support services and education based programmes for children e.g Alcohol and Substance misuse issues.



Referral to Viva:

Viva is a specialist service offering support to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans young people (and those questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity) and their families. The services are available to young people aged between 11 and 25. Viva provides a safe and welcoming space for young people to access informal education opportunities and support from specialist LGBT staff.



Seasons for Growth:

This is loss and grief peer-group education programme to support young people aged 11 to 16 year and young people who are affected by change, loss and grief.

 


Friends For Life Programme:

A programme to help children to manage worries and to improve their Self Esteem and Confidence, as well as to increase their skills to find solutions to daily problems.


DBT

DBT is for children that aim to be taught life skills for improving coping strategies. Specifically it aims to equip the young person with the skills for managing their emotions in healthy ways and to increase their resilience for when they have to help with stressful situations.


Relaxation Sessions:

These are techniques of controlling your feelings, and when practiced and used regularly, they will change thoughts, feelings and behaviour, breaking the cycle of stress or anxiety. Every person will find different relaxation techniques helpful, and can also help if you are struggling with sleeping.


Unearthing:

These are unearthing and journal boxes, that are fun and created out of beautiful materials, paints and colours. They are used by both children and adults - to Build Self Esteem, Empathy and to sole problems with compassions and positivity. The boxes are also used to help young people who find it difficult to express themselves.


Mindfulness:

Is an awareness-raising exercise to give all students a taste of mindfulness so that they know about it and can return to it later in life in they choose to do so. The aims are to help children:-


 

  • Improve their concentration and focus in class in exams and tests, o the sport field when playing games and when paying attention and listening to others
  • to fulfil their potential and pursue their own goals e.g be more creative, more relaxed both academically and personally.
  • to experience greater well-being (feeling happier, calmer, more fulfilled).
  • to work with difficult Mental states such as anxious thoughts and low moods.
  • to cope with the everyday stresses and strains of adolescent life such as exams, relationships, sleep problems, family issues.
