About the Department
The Department strives to ensure that all students develop skills in the Welsh Language which will help them gain future employment and be able to fully access the culture of the country in which they live.
All students study Welsh as a Second Language.
There is a heavy focus on skills, including oral, listening, reading and writing skills as well as thinking skills and key skills, at both Key Stages.
Key Stage 3
|We follow the Welsh Second Language National Curriculum.Welsh Second Language is now a Core Subject at KS2 and therefore students arrive at high school with a greater knowledge of Welsh than in the past.The KS3 Scheme of Work has been updated to cater for this and will continue to develop as students move up the school.In the Academic Year 2012-13 the topics that each Year will cover are as follows:Year 7 – Myself, The Area, Leisure Time, Travel and Over the Summer.
Year 8 – Family and Animals, Food and Clothes, The Area, Travel,Wales, Work and Leisure Time.
Year 9 – Leisure Time, Work,Wales, The House and Countries.
All Key Stage 3 Students complete a minimum of 2 Assessment Tests in each skill of oracy, reading and writing during the Academic Year.
Year 7 is taught in classes according to their Reading Ages, before being placed in sets in Year 8.
Key Stage 4
|Welsh is a core subject at KS4 and all students will either study the WJEC GCSE Welsh Second Language Short Course or OCR NVQ Welsh Second Language.Year 10 and 11 students are taught in sets.The focus for the GCSE Short Course students is the completion of 3 Controlled Assessments.They also sit a one hour Reading and Writing Examination at the end of Year 11.Students have the option to study the WJEC GCSE Welsh Second Language Full Course. In addition to the core element of the course, students sit a second one hour Reading and Writing Examination and also sit an Oral/Reading Examination.|

CAS Group Speaking task and CAW Individual Writing Task – First 2 weeks in October. (Preparation time – throughout September)
- We are proud that we have achieved good results at both KS3 and at GCSE level over the past three years.
- Thomas Williams won the North Wales Heat and came joint fourth in the National Final of the Welsh Spelling Bee Competition.
- Two pupils represented the School at the Proclamation Ceremony of the National Eisteddfod of Wales held at Denbigh in June 2012.
