Pupil Deprivation Grant

Rhyl High School – Pupil Deprivation Grant 2015/16

The Pupil Deprivation Grant (PDG) is the Welsh Government’s principal means of supporting schools to tackle the effects poverty on educational attainment.

The purpose of the PDG is to improve outcomes for learners eligible for free school meal (FSM) and Looked After Children (LAC). It is intended to overcome the additional barriers that prevent learners from disadvantaged backgrounds achieving their full potential.

In 2015/16 Rhyl High School has received a Pupil Deprivation Grant allocation of £244,650.

We are using the grant to fund the following activity:

Employment of Teaching Assistant in English Department to assist in raising standards in Literacy and support vulnerable learners.

Employment of Teaching Assistant in Mathematic Department to assist in raising standards in Numeracy and support vulnerable leaners.

Further development of induction support facility to establish an area of security and safety for vulnerable students in year 7 and 8.

Employment of full time Learning Coach to assist/support with parental involvement, peer tutoring, social and emotional aspects of learning.

Employment of part time Teacher to work with FSM pupils to increase literacy and numeracy skills and thus raise attainment levels.

Cluster Transition/Peer mentoring FSM pupils project. A more supported and seamless transition for students on FSM to High School to ensure their academic attainment does not dip.

Match funding with Communities First for Emotional Resilience Officer maximising partnership working to ensure that we are developing and implementing a joint approach to tackling educational inequality for children living in poverty.

Homework club after school each day will focus on FSM pupils attending.

Employment of Data Manger (0.5) to produce and analyse data for FSM pupils and non FSM pupils so interventions can be targeted.

Vocational Courses for FSM pupils to increase attainment levels and ensure all pupils leave school with qualifications

Investment in use of technology to enhance learning and life opportunities.

Contribution to Counselling service.
