About the Department

Bienvenue and Bienvenido to Rhyl High School’s Modern Foreign Languages Department.

The Department’s main aim is to make learning languages fun and relevant.

We especially seek to raise pupils’ confidence in speaking and communicating with others, coupled with thinking skills and problem solving to analyse how languages are formed.

Reading & Writing skills are also focused upon in order to provide a smooth transition into the KS4 options, at a high standard.

We will also be using the Routes into Languages National Spelling Bee Competition to help raise literacy.

Curriculum Structure

Key Stage 3 We follow the Modern Foreign Language National Curriculum. In Year 7, pupils are taught in classes grouped by Reading Age, before being placed in sets from Year 8 onwards.

In alternate years, Year 7 pupils study either French or Spanish, recapping and building on their lessons in primary.

Topics covered in 2012-2013 will be:

Year 7 Spanish – Spanish culture, Myself, Family, Pets, Housing, Town & Region

Year 8 French – Free time, TV & Cinema, School, Food & Drink, Shopping, Holidays

Year 9 Spanish – World of Work, Special Occasions & Celebrations, Environment, Routine, Health & Illness,

In the last half term pupils are given a chance to study French.

Pupils are assessed on Oracy, Reading & Writing skills throughout the year.

Key Stage 4 KS4 – Pupils opt for NVQ Level 2 Business Spanish or French (= GCSE Grade B).This is a coursework-based course studied over the 2 years, providing pupils with skills relevant to the Business World and that of Tourism, Marketing etc.
