WIDER LEARNING

 

Rhyl High School firmly believes that pupils need to be true independent learners.


They need to learn to manage their own time effectively to achieve the outcomes they are capable of.


Therefore, as a school we expect pupils to understand that learning does not stop at the end of the school day.


This is to support the pupils to get the best GCSE grades that they can achieve and is about the pupils investing in themselves and their futures.


Expectations


In KS3 (Yr 7, 8, 9) this will take the form of 5 x 30min tasks per week:


  • 1 x 30min task set by English department
  • 1 x 30min task set by Maths department
  • 1 x 30min task set by Science department
  • 2 x 30min tasks of independent study on a subject of their choice.

        There are a variety of recommended websites they can use for this, these are listed further down this page.


In KS4 (Yr 10 + 11) this will take the form of 10 x 1hr tasks per fortnight:


  • 1 x 1hr task set by English department
  • 1 x 1 hr task set by Maths department
  • 1 x 1 hr task set by Science department
  • 7 x 1hr tasks where it will be down to the pupils to decide where their focus should be, with guidance from all their teachers.


         Some examples of tasks that could be completed are:


  •  Attend after-school revision sessions in the various subjects that they study.
  •   Work through practice GCSE exam papers.
  •   Some teachers may choose to set work on a subject based ‘Google classroom’, pupils will be directed to these if that is the case.
  •   Pupils can also use the recommended websites listed further down this page.


*There is access to computers available in our after-school homework club.

Bitesize is a learning platform that provides digital resources for GCSE option subject areas.


Mathswatch.co.uk  (Maths)

 

Mathswatch is a learning platform which contains videos, online assessments, feedback tools and printable worksheets to help develop pupils' mathematical skills through independent learning. The videos enable pupils to learn/revise the Mathematical topics. Every clip has real exam questions for pupils to do - because we all know that to be good at Maths, a pupil has to do it, not just watch it. The online bank of questions contains 1000s of exam-style questions that are automatically marked and additional worksheets of questions can also be completed for extra practise.

Seneca is an interactive learning website that is proven to make you remember topics better. Click on the links to join your teacher’s class. Complete the interactive tutorials and start learning! The smart learning algorithms will provide you with instant feedback and tailor future content to match your individual needs. Your class teacher will be able to respond to your progress, offer help and set appropriate assignments and revision tasks

 

Duolingo.com (Welsh and Modern Foreign Languages)

 

A language learning website and app. Students are able to use this to support their Welsh and Foreign Language development.

 

GCSE Revision Website


Parents/carers and pupils can use this website to help prepare themselves for exams.

There are various aspects to the website including specialist revision information about the specific subjects being studied,​ revision techniques, self-care techniques and exam timetables.
