About the Department

The Department strives to ensure that all students develop skills in MFL which will help them gain future employment and be able to travel and live in Francophone or Hispanic countries across the world.  In addition, the acquisition of French or Spanish MFL skills will enable to pupils to access other MFL

 

All students study French or Spanish in Key Stage 3 and can opt for either in Key Stage 4.

There is a heavy focus on skills, including oral, listening, reading and writing skills as well as thinking skills, literacy, numeracy and key skills, at both Key Stages.

 

 

Curriculum Structure

Key Stage 3

 

We follow the MFL National Curriculum. In the Academic Year 2016-17 the topics that each Year will cover are as follows:

 

  • Year 7 Spanish – Spanish culture and Spanish basics eg cognates, days & months, numbers, alphabet, Tongue twisters, Myself, Pets, Family, Housing, Town & Region.

 

  • Year 8 French – Free time sand telling the time, TV & Cinema, School. Food & Drink, Market Shopping. Holidays.

 

  • Year 9 Spanish – Jobs and Work Experience, Special Occasions, Clothes & Shopping for clothes, Environment, Daily Routine, Illness & Healthy Living

 

  • All Key Stage 3 Students complete a minimum of 2 Assessment Tests in each skill of oracy, reading and writing during the Academic Year.

 

  • The Department also conducts Literacy and numeracy tests each term with each year group in KS3.
  • KS3 Homework focuses on ICT, Literacy, Numeracy, Reading and Writing skills.

 

  • Year 7 is taught in form groups, before being placed in sets in Year 8.

 

 

Key Stage 4

 

MFL is an option subject at KS4.  Pupils can opt to continue with the subject they have studied at year 9 eg The current Year 10 had the option to continue with French as GCSE or Level 2 NVQ Business or opt to start Level 2 NVQ Business Spanish.

 

The New GCSE Specification is ENTIRELY end of course based ie no longer based on Controlled Assessment.

 

Level 2 NVQ Business is an entirely coursework-based with 18 Business style tasks.

  • On-going task completion in lesson time.
  • Year 10 – Level 2 Writing & Reading Units
  • Year 11 – Completion of Listening and Speaking Units
